Through lived experiences, Ryan Deneault shares his unique story of being a functioning addict for 36+ years and his attempts to fit into society for nearly five decades. His journey serves to help others find their healing path, while also teaching about Canada’s history, Truth and Reconciliation, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. In this powerful narrative, Ryan opens up about his personal battle with addiction and his ultimate transformation through wellness and recovery.

Every week, CFJC TV Kamloops gives space to Ryan to share stories to help you reflect on your own journey and the history of Canada. This story outlines the profound significance of the 13 moons calendar, a traditional timekeeping method rooted in Indigenous cultures. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, the 13 moons calendar follows the rhythms of the moon, with each moon spanning approximately 28 days. Each moon holds a unique name and significance, aligning with natural cycles, seasonal changes, and cultural practices. From the "Blooming Moon" in June, which celebrates growth and renewal, to the "Falling Leaves Moon" in October, these names guide communities in their relationship with the environment.

Ryan connects his personal healing journey to the lessons of the 13 moons, emphasizing how this cyclical perception of time fosters respect, responsibility, and reciprocity with nature. It reminds us of the importance of living in harmony with the earth and the interconnectedness of past, present, and future.

His reflections serve as a reminder of the power of unity, the importance of understanding Canada’s history, and the healing that comes from embracing Indigenous wisdom.
